Clinical Service for Patients: Obesity
The clinical obesity and bariatric surgery service consists of a large multidisciplinary team that works in Charing Cross Hospitals with dedicated bariatric surgery specialist nurses, dieticians, psychiatrists as well as designated medical and managerial staff. As the Hammersmith Hospitals Trusts serve a very multiethnic population approximately 20% of all patients that attend the hospital have obesity. Only a small portion is reviewed in clinic, but interaction with General Practitioners is improving education surrounding treatment options in primary care.
There are weekly clinical interdepartmental meetings were cases are discussed and research is planned.
The obesity service has a national and international reputation for its clinical and scientific work on appetite control in obesity and after bariatric surgery.
Specialised out patients clinics include:
Surgery for obesity (bariatric surgery) service: Mr Alberto Isla, Consultant Bariatric surgeon, has a particular interest in obesity and has weekly clinics. There is active research collaboration between the medical and surgical arms on the pathogenesis and progression of obesity and weight optimisation after bariatric surgery.
Medical obesity and bariatric surgery services: A weekly clinic is run by Dr Carel le Roux at Charing Cross Hospital and provides an excellent training opportunity for SpRs attached to the department.
Dietetic Services: A weekly multidisciplinary team meeting is held at Charing Cross at which all patients with dietary problems after bariatric surgery is discussed.
Psychiatric services: Dr Mireia Pujol and Norman Pool reviews all patients pre-operatively and addresses any psychiatric pathology in order to optimise weight loss. The research interest of the unit revolves around the psychological aspects of control before and after bariatric surgery.
